hottest 100 [Jan. 21st, 2010|03:46 pm]
Well, it's that time again..guess the top ten..I didn't listen to much of JJJ this year, due to the fact most of the music was not enjoyable to my ears.

But I made a list anywayCollapse )

smells like....sexism? [Jul. 13th, 2009|06:09 pm]

Well, it certainly has been an interesting monday, with Triple J being overrun by comments on the fact there were only 2 songs with female vocals, one a guest vocal spot. While this doesn't overly surprise me, I was expecting to hear Portishead's Glory Box, Bjork, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and others in the top 100. There are reasons behind this. Here are a few:

* There were a large amount of bands compared to solo artists - Female bands often (unfortunately) fall into a category by where to survive they need to a) play pop music b) be extremely good looking c) play that angry chick rock that tends to grate on people. This is a terrible generalisation, I know, but that is the way it tends to be viewed. Hence it is harder for the female solo acts to gain a place.

* Most of the top 100 are songs you hear on popular music stations. Popular music stations tend to play only poppy female songs, whilst allowing male pop and rock bands airplay, because they believe that's what people want to hear.

* Because of the above reason, these bands rarely last more than a few years, let alone a decade of being in the limelight. Most of the songs in the hottest 100 are songs from artists that still make the news, be it for new releases, touring, death...you name it, as long as they are still getting people reading about them. Because of the long standing popularity of these bands, mostly due to extended radio airplay across multiple stations, they are always fresh in people's minds. When you think of the biggest bands in the world, you think of all those songs you hear being played by cover bands, on lists of all time greats, played by guests on rage, and also, covered by newer bands.

By the way, I so don't want to this to come off as me saying I hate female singers, that is simply NOT true, I have many, many cd's that I absolutely adore from female artists, Melissa Auf Der Mar, Patti Smith, Beth Gibbons, Pretty Girls Make Graves....the list goes on. I consider some of those artists the best singer/songwriters I have ever heard

I'm sure there are a multitude of other reasons, but there are a few for you to mull over. Comments?

JJJ hottest 100 of all time... [Jun. 3rd, 2009|09:11 pm]
Well, I tried to just use the songs that came to mind, ones that shaped my life. I ended up with this list, and though I feel I don't have to justify my choices, I still intend to:
Crowded House - Private Universe
A song that I have always loved, one that makes me remember why and when I started to play guitar

Shihad - Wait And See
A festival classic that always makes me remember my old BDO days

Something for Kate - Pinstripe
The song that confirmed my love of alternative aussie music

Muse - Plug In Baby The song that made me realise you can do almost anything with a guitar
R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
Just a classic song, I was too young for it, but the memory of its effects still lives on for me

Foo Fighters - Everlong
Classic, just a rocking classic

Tool - Stinkfist
Part of my first foray into heavier music, I loved it

A Perfect Circle - Judith
First supergroup favourite

Portishead - Glory Box
Found Portishead later in life than I would like, but fell in love instantly

Death Cab for Cutie - The New Year
This song reminds me of 2003, when my mate Jerrem and I took the trip to Sydney to see Something for Kate, and then up to Byron Bay for Splendour and Coldplay, I was 17 at the time.

11th song - the one that didn't make the cut - Silverchair - Tomorrow - My love of Silverchair has been tainted by more recent releases. Foo Fighters nearly fell into the same category, but narrowly escaped.

[music |Big Heavy Stuff - Dear Friends and Enemies]

All this real estate is yours, and mine

Pulling "Dear Friends and Enemies" from the cd rack took me back, this album is just so perfect for sitting and thinking with. So with that, I figured a post was in order.

Not much has been happening, I am frustrated as a man can be of late. The worst time to not have a job is now. So where to go for a guy who can make a damn good coffee, has retail management skills and has as much, if not more computer knowledge than many people with tech jobs. I guess just keep applying and something will happen, that's what everyone says, but it doesn't seem to help. I have always been a hard worker and a team player, putting others ahead of me, so why is nobody looking for that?

Well, hopefully that will all sort itself out, it just makes me feel so disconnected from everything, spending all day looking for a decent job is crazy.

I wish I could move around, Perth seems to be so stagnant of late, I don't know if it will be the place for me in the long run.

In better news, my footy team won our grand final for recreational footy (which is sort of like touch, but faster paced and a bit more manly). We beat the opposition 93 - 18, so it was a hammering, I kicked 5 goals 2 points, which was awesome.

from cam's lj [Jan. 14th, 2009|03:34 pm]
He basically sets up some rules for picking your own all-star rock band. These rules are:
You must build the ideal rock band. You need a singer, a guitarist, a bass player, a drummer, and one "wild card" (this musician can play whatever you choose and provide backing vocals). The rules are as follows:

1) You can't take more than one member from any given existing group.

2) You can't pick Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley as your vocalist.

3) You can't pick Jimi Hendrix as your guitar player.

4) If you pick a bassist who sings (like Les Claypool) or a drummer who sings (like Don Henley) or a guitarist who sings (like Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine), he (or she) can't sing in this particular band. They can play their specific instrument only. Also, if you select Les Claypool or Don Henley, you're a prick.

5) You can't pick John Bonham as your drummer. You also can't pick Animal from The Muppet Show.

His choices are Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi on guitar, Parliament-Funkadelic's Bootsy Collins on bass, Mötley Crüe's Tommy Lee on drums, Prince as my multi-instrumental wild card, and Karen Carpenter as the frontwoman.

I wonder what are your choices? What are mine?

Guitar - John Mayer
Bass - Melissa Auf Der Mar
Drums - Danny Carey
Frontperson - Michael Stipe
Wild Card - Ken Stringfellow

do you feel like there's something you don't feel enough [Jan. 8th, 2009|12:57 pm]
[mood |contemplativecontemplative]

it's a perfectly good poison for the perfectly numb...

Things have been interesting lately, and i'm not sure what to think. I don't feel like I am in the right place for me at the moment, but I have absolutely no idea where I am supposed to be. Being jobless gives me way too much time to think about my life, the time I have wasted on so many pursuits, and finding that I am the sort of person that never finishes things, even though I tend to be the one thinking that about others. I have been thinking about doing the MSCE course and going and working in I.T. Music has always been the one thing I always wanted to do, but I am never sure where I want to fit myself into that world. To be honest I feel like I want to move around in the world, that I have been stuck in a spot for way too long, and I miss adventuring.

[music |John Mayer - Good Love Is On The Way]

Carry the weight of the world in the palm of my hand, Who did you think I was

Well it's that time of year again, the end, my thoughts on the year in music. After slaughtering some of my favourite artists last year in my end of year music blog, I was hoping I could get away with being a bit nicer this year, but we will see how that turns out as I progress.

Top 10 albums for 2008

1. R.E.M. - Accelerate - A very enjoyable album, way too short, but they are back in fine form.
2. Portishead - Third - Many reviewers and fans hate this album, I personally think that the departure from their old stuff has given them a new life, and the new sound is working for them.
3. John Mayer - Where The Light Is.. (Live DVD/CD) - Anyone who can do an acoustic set, a jazz trio set, and then get out there and do a full band set deserves praise. Especially when the sets are amazing, especially the guitar work in the jazz set.
4. The Living End - White Noise - This album is one that seems to mesh well, unlike many of their other recent offerings. This album feels very right, with some great songs, and a polished sound.
5. Eagles of Death Metal - Heart On - Sexy, just sexy.
6. Joshua Radin - Simple Times - Great acoustic artist who has had his music played on many shows, such as scrubs. His songwriting skills really show through on this album.
7. Coldplay - Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends - An interesting piece, there are however a few low points on the album, not their best.
8. Wanderlust - Gavin Rossdale - This album slipped by many people, and that is a shame.
9. Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I - IV - A great instrumental set, some of the songs are not as good as others, but there are some great compositions in this cd set.
10. Foxboro Hot Tubs - Stop Drop and Roll!!! - A funky album from the guys in Green Day working as a side project.

Top 10 disappointments \ low points for 2008

1. Isaac Hayes passing on. RIP Chef.
2. The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath - Have been getting worse since their amazing debut, this album for me felt like a low point.
3. Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs - No matter how many times I tried to get into this album, I felt like it was keeping me at arms length. Didn't do it for me.
4. Ben Folds - Sorry mate, but you need to go back and write some real music, Way to Normal is terrible.
5. Weezer - Flogging a dead horse I know, but their new stuff is awful.
6. Snow Patrol - I have tried to get into the new album, but it feels like a stinker for me. Final Straw may be the peak of their talent.
7. Metallica not giving up on music, that is a huge low point.
8. Finding out Coldplay tickets are $140, and that most festivals are that sort of money. $50 big gigs are so far behind us. I remember paying about $45 to see Powderfinger / Something for Kate at the Entertaintment Centre back in the day.
9. Not being in the U.S.A. to see the Ben Folds Five reunion show.
10. The disbanding of The Departure
